7 Famous Footballers Who Kept Their Promises

7 Famous Footballers Who Kept Their Promises

While there is a lot of showboating, diving, and other antics like that in football, they aren’t great to watch.

There are many moments in the sport, that make you smile, laugh, and also cry.

Due to the up and down nature of the sport, you can over the moon at one moment but then be left frustrated the next.

But in this post, I won’t be talking about goals as such.

Instead, I will be talking about moments where footballers kept their promises while playing on the big stage.

From dances to dedicating goals to people who passed away, I will take you through 7 footballers who kept to their word.

Table of Contents

  • 1. James Maddison
  • 2. Neymar
  • 3. Lionel Messi
  • 4. Mason Mount
  • 5. Bernardo Silva
  • 6. Dries Mertens
  • 7. Kylian Mbappe

1. James Maddison

Leticsters number 10, James Maddison has always been known as a character, so when he pulled off a celebration influenced by one of his good mates it was no surprise.

In a game against Tottenham, Maddison scored to put his team 2 nil up and then proceeded to do a shimmy celebration that YouTuber and good friend Chunkz sent him a video off and told him to pull off next time he scores.

Unfortunately for him though, while he did keep to his promise by doing it the goal was shortly after chalked off for offside.

2. Neymar

While many fans only see one side of Neymar which is the playacting and the dramatic diving, he does have a nice side to him.

This was showcased in a wholesome moment back when he was playing for Santos in Brazil.

He visited a child with cancer, and that child asked him whether he could do a celebration he’d come up when he next scores for Santos.

Keeping to his promise he did exactly that in the next fixture. As you can see below after scoring he along with his teammates got involved in the celebration.

While Neymar has his critics mainly due to his on-field antics, there is no doubt that he is a top individual.

3. Lionel Messi

Back in 2018, when Lionel Messi was playing at the World Cup with Argentina, he was given a red ribbon as a lucky charm from an Argentinian reporter before his final group game with Nigeria.

The reporter told him how the ribbon was from his mother and that she wanted him to pass it to him, to give him luck in the next game in which they needed to win.

Messi then went on to score in that decisive game and revealed during a post-match interview the ribbon that was wrapped around his right foot.

4. Mason Mount

Maddison isn’t the only footballer to have a close-knit relationship with Chunkz, as Chelsea’s Mason Mount was also given the challenge of performing a celebration the next time he hits the net.

In a video in which he did a guess the song challenge alongside Yung Filly and Chunkz, Mason was given three different celebrations to choose from the next time he scores.

Of these Mason chose the Frankenstein celebration which he did for his next goal after scoring against Everton.

From there he made it his signature celebration, using it against Liverpool later on in the season, as you can see below.

5. Bernardo Silva

Bernardo Silva has always been a class act off and on the field, so when he kept to his promise when pulling off a celebration when scoring for Manchester City it served as no surprise.

After a collab with YouTubers Poet And Vuj on the Copa90 channel, where they did various football challenges the Portuguese international was asked by Vuj whether he would be up for doing the ‘have a nice’ celebration next time he scores.

This is exactly what he did after finding the opener in a 3-1 win against Bournemouth back in 2018, has he went to the camera before doing the celebration.

6. Dries Mertens

Dries Merten didn’t exactly make a promise, but he did do a celebration in his following game in inspiration to Italian Tommaso Starace.

Tommaso who is a member of the Napoli staff did a dance at an event, which caught on with the players.

Dries then replicated this shortly after scoring the opener against Barcelona.

7. Kylian Mbappe

Kylian Mbappe didn’t promise to do a celebration, instead, the promise he made was a little different.

That was to get blue hair.

As random as it is, the footballer decided to get light blue hair in inspiration to the Mercurial Superfly colorway that was brought out in 2019.

It was first brought up when the Parisian appeared on the Complex Youtube channel talking about his favorite sneakers.

Once the blue mercurials were brought up, the host questioned him on getting blue hair to which Mbappe replied maybe.
